  10. What is a 'trip'?

We see a trip as a complete journey, which can be divided in different stages by 'waypoints'. A journey can be anything from a three day city trip, two weeks vacation, three months language stay or a one year trip around the world. As you see, you alone decide how your trip should look like.

  11. How many trips can I create?

Mahangu knows no limits. Create as many trips as you want! However, we recommend you to create one single trip for your journey, and section it with waypoints. This way, your whole journey is held together.

  12. Will everyone have access to my trip?

If you set the visibility to public, everyone will have access. But if you choose private, only your friends with the appropriate key will have access. We appreciate every public trip that is shared to the Mahangu community and the whole world. But of course it’s your decision.

    Public

If you choose public, you get these advantages:

    1. The entire world can follow your trip. Become an opinion leader for exclusive travel destinations.
    2. Your friends and family don't need a key, to access your trip
    3. You can make it onto the Mahangu start page, as a favorite trip!
    4. Your trip can be found on page "trips"
    5. Every Facebook user can 'like' your trip and its photos

    Private

If you want more privacy, you should set the visibility to private.
These are the key points, you should know:

    1. Your friends and family need a key, to access the trip
    2. The address to a trip will look like this "www.mahangu.com/trip/ZZZ?access=2r4mkv"
    3. You can send the address to your friends either by mail, or post it on Facebook
    4. We do not show the Facebook Like button on a private trip, and its photos
    5. Only your friends can see what you've experienced and profit of your tips.

If you tend to a private trip, think about it! A lot of people will be grateful, for your tips and impressions.

  13. How long will my trip be online?

  19. I cannot upload photos / videos. What can I do?

You should check the following three points. First of all, you should use the latest version of a modern browser. Then, javascript must be active, which should be the case. You can check that in the settings of your browser. Last but not least a flash player must be installed, best in the latest version. To download the suitable version for your browser, please click here.

  20. What are photos with GPS information good for?

Mahangu offers you the great possibility, to show photos on the map exactly were you took them. We integrated it in our photo view, for a single photo, and in the trip map for all photos of a trip. Just choose a trip, resize the map for the best experience, and let the photos (pins) be displayed. Hover to see a preview or click to open the photo view.
To make it all possible, the photos must contain GPS information. For more information about how to add GPS information to photos, see number 21

  21. How can I add GPS information to my photos?

You have two options. Either your camera supports GPS or you do use a GPS tracker, which constantly records your current position. More about this under "Option 2".

    Option 1
The easiest way is, when your camera has GPS integrated, and therefore all your photos automatically contain positioning data. In the last time, more and more cameras with GPS support have been released. If you're planning to buy a new camera, why don't you choose one with built-in GPS support? But what if you do already have a camera, lets say an older one, that doesn't support GPS? Or you have an expensive DSLR, without a chance to upgrade? Then, you still have "Option 2".

    Option 2
If your camera doesn't support GPS, you can use a so called GPS tracker. The main task of such a device is to record position information, every 5, 10 or 15 seconds, depending on the device and settings. Some devices also do have a display, and show interesting information like the altitude or time.
After you have taken your pictures, load them together with the GPS information on to your mac or pc, and merge them. There are couple of tools to do that.

It's easy to use, a good low-cost alternative and you can use it with every camera.
We from Mahangu both use GPS trackers on every trip we do!

  22. Can all participants of my trip upload photos / videos and write stories?

Yes. All participants of a trip have equal rights. So everyone can add waypoints, upload photos / videos or write stories.

  23. Can everyone download my original photos / videos?

No. Original photos / videos can only be downloaded by participants of the corresponding trip.

  24. What is a so called 'waypoint'?

Some people might have a problem, to imagine that. But let us give you some examples:

    1. Say you do a round trip in europe. Why not use one waypoint per visited city?
    2. If you do a caribbean cruise, every island you stop could be a waypoint
    3. On a 14 days safari, you could create one waypoint per day
    4. If you need more examples, click the 'All'-link and see how others use waypoints to divide there trips
  25. How are the waypoints sorted, and can I shift them by hand?

Waypoints are always sorted by its date. If several waypoints have equal dates, they will be sorted in order of creation.
At this time, there is no way to shift waypoints by hand.

  26. How do I create an entire trip?

You can do it in three easy steps:

    3. Time to upload them. Use this opportunity to set descriptions on already uploaded photos.
    4. After uploading and texting, hit the "Finish" button.

The easiest way to share your trip is, when you log in, open your trip and click on '4. Share Trip'. On the following page you can then inform your friends via mail or facebook. To post a message onto your facebook wall, you have to log in to Mahangu with your facebook account. But what if I did create a local Mahangu account during the registration? 29. How can I change the key photo of my trip?

The key photo of your trip is always a photo, which has already been uploaded to one of your waypoints. So you don't have to upload an extra photo, but rather select an existing one.

  34. Why do I see all photos in bad quality?

Mahangu resizes and compresses all uploaded photos, so that they can be displayed faster. In most cases you won't realize that the photos are compressed, with a few exceptions.
But when all photos are in bad quality, Mahangu won't be responsible, but rather your internet provider or similar. The experience has shown, that when you are abroad and surfing on the internet with your mobile divice (roaming), some of the providers will resize the photos, to reduce the amount of data to transfer.
