    1 Bali 27.08.2010 Indonesien —

    Kuta, Kuta, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

The first day we spent flying across the globe. First from Zurich to Amsterdam, then a short stop in Singapore and finally a couple of hours to Bali Denpasar. This is where we booked a small hotel (JBoutique Hotel) near the airport. This short stop was necessary because we didn't have any connecting flight to Jakarta (where our GAP Adventure trip actually began). So were forced to stay an extra night in Bali which turned out to be quite good as we already had a very long flight to Bali.

The next day we had our connecting flight to Jakarta. We decided to leave all the extra clothes we packed for the second week at Bali's beaches in a locker at the Denpasar airport. The price was reasonable and we didn't had to carry all the extra luggage with us.

    2 Jakarta 28.08.2010 Indonesien —

Pasar Manggis, Jakarta Capital Region, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

First day in Jakarta. After landing we headed to the taxi stand to get a ride to the hotel at the city center. Let me tell you the traffic was a mess. After an hour of driving we finally arrived at the hotel where we would meet our group of fellow-travellers the next day. As we still had some time to kill that day we decided to visit Java's largest shopping mall Jakarta Plaza. Huge! After a nice dinner we went back to the hotel to get some rest before our tour would start.

The next morning we met our tour leader at the hotel. Her name was Yo. That's what we used to call her because we couldn't remember her real name Yo Akirawal Lovetheking.

We spent the day exploring the sights of Jakarta: The national monument which is really worth a visit and the nearby mosque. It was actually a little bit tricky to get in there because this isn't an actual tourist attraction. We just walked in and asked whether we could have a look. The people were really friendly and offered to show us around. We got those fancy dresses for visitors and could even take pictures. Absolutely impressing.

That evening back at the hotel we met the rest of our group with whom we will travel the next ten days and went out for dinner.

    3 Bandung 30.08.2010 Indonesien —

    Kebon Jeruk, Bandung, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

Rise and shine! After a good breakfast we packed our bags and jumped into a couple of mini busses which drove us up to Jakarta's train station. First class ride to Bandung. Make sure to wear some warm clothes as they tend to cool down the coach to like minus 10 degrees. And that's where I caught a flu which I could cure the whole next week.

The scenery along the tracks were stunning. Upon arrival we visited the "Niagara Falls" of Bandung. Forget about it. Just an ordinary water fall in the middle of nowhere. Nothing special about it.

    4 Yogyakarta 31.08.2010 Indonesien —

    Prawirodirjan, Yogyakarta, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

The next day was another long train ride. This time I was prepared and put on some warm clothes but it was too late anyway. We finally arrived in Yogyakarta. The place where we would stay for the next two days. We didn't waste a minute and started exploring the city right away. Some sights we see:

    - Animal market: A must! Loads of funny, cute, sad and scary creatures. We just couldn't stop making pictures.
    - Water castle: Na! Just a small castle with a little bit of water, nothing exciting about that.
    - Musuem: Although I am not that musuem-kinda-guy worth a visit

Besides all these sights make sure to have a cup of Kopi Luwak coffee. Or what I use to call it: Cat-Shit-Coffee. It's made out of coffee beans which have been eaten and digested by a rare cat. The cats poo will then be collected, washed, peeled and brewed. It's the most expensive coffee in the world. We were told that in London you pay around 50$ for a single cup. We got it there for around 8$. Which is a fortune there - compared to a complete dinner including a coke for 1$!

    5 Prambanan 02.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Boko Harjo, Prambanan, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

We continued our adventure by mini bus to Prambanan, which is located near Yogya. Prambanan is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Sustainer (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva). We had a guided tour with a funny pervert which told us all the dirty stories behind the stone creatures. It has a lot to do with Kamasutra.

The temples are absolutely impressive and they put a lot of effort in reconstructing them.

    6 Borobudur 02.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Borobudur, Borobudur, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

The last sight for that day was Borobudur. It's a beautiful temple and partf of the UNESCO world heritage. The monument is decorated with 504 Buddah statues. A main dome, located at the center of the top platform, is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated bell called stupa.
We had a guide showing us around before we made ourselves comfortable on top of the monument to watch the beautiful sunset.

    7 Mount Bromo 04.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Ngadisari, Sukapura, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

An absolute highlight of the trip was actually getting up early in the morning. Even before dawn. We drove up to a viewpoint with Jeeps from where we could see Mount Bromo and a had a stunning sunrise. Although it was freezing cold the pictures we took were just amazing!

Once the sun got up it became warmer and we continued our excursion to the foot of Mount Bromo. From there we walked up to the crater of the volcano. The sulfur was burning in our eyes, but I guess that just has to be part of the experience. Instead of walking down we grabbed a horse and descended on its back. Mine was called "Cheeky" and it looked a little bit "overwhelmed" by my size. It nevertheless brought me down safely and it was fun to ride.

    8 Coffee Plantage 04.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Kalibaru Manis, Kalibaru, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

After an exciting day we continued our journey eastwards to Bali. We stopped in a little village called Kalibaru that night. The hotel was quite luxurious and even had a pool. Too bad the weather wasn't good enough for a little swim. Instead we spent the time relaxing or checking our E-Mails (me mostly second). We hit the sack early that night because we got up a 4 o'clock that day. Nevertheless we signed up for a little "Jungle Tour" the next morning as the hotel was situated right next to a coffee plantage. The workers there showed us all the plants and fruits they were growing there. They could even climb a coconut tree faster than a monkey! Wicked!

It was the last day of our guided tour. We crossed the ocean and finally made our way back to Bali. We spent that night in a restaurant with all our fellow travelers and said farewell! Thank you all for that great experience!

    10 Kuta 06.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Kuta, Kuta, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

First day of the second part of our trip to Java. It was time to (hopefully) get back the stored luggage from the Denpasar airport. Although we had some kind of receipt, I wasn't sure whether (a) our luggage was still there, (b) the small luggage-storing-company was still there or (c) that they would charge us some additional fortune. But luckily nothing of that happened. It kinda felt like home, where everything just works the way you expect it to! Awesome!

From the airport we grabbed a taxi to Nusa Dua where our luxurious hotel was waiting. Even the driveway was intimidating! (http://www.nusaduahotel.com). Actually so where the prices there. - Compared to the first part of the trip where we had lunch for 1$. Here you couldn't even have your shirt ironed for that. But it was that part of the journey where we could relax and take a time off - not the time to worry about money (although we brought our laundry to a little shop within the village where they washed it for 6$).

    11 Nusa Dua 07.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Benoa, Kuta, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

Not too much to tell here as we spent the day relaxing at the pool, the beach and then the pool again. But the highlight of that day was our dinner at the Bumbu Bali (http://www.balifoods.com) in Nusa Dua Village. The chef is actually Swiss, cooking delicious Balinese food. Make sure to try the Rijsttafel (1 actually fits two persons!). It's like nothing you ever tasted before. It has like a bazillion courses and each one is even better than the one before. Don't miss it!

    12 Kuta 09.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Kuta, Kuta, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

Because you just can't spent the whole time lying on the beach, we decided to make a little shopping trip to Kuta (the whether wasn't that good anyway). Kuta is like 30 minutes away from Nusa Dua (by taxi - make sure to go by meter). Kuta has some nice small shops and a beautiful beach promenade. Quite busy and there is a lot going on. That's probably when we decided that we need to have some surfing lessons here before we were heading back home.

    13 Uluwatu 10.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Pecatu, Kuta, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

Uluwatu is a beautiful temple on the south coast of Bali. In the meantime we met some great people from Germany (Katharina & Pascal) with whom we shared a mini bus to the temple. There was actually another newly-wed couple with us but I can't remember their names. We kinda missed to hook up on Facebook. Back to the story of the temple.

We drove down the coast for about an hour and got out at that temple. Men beware: you have to put on a skirt there. But we were all men enough for it. Definitely. But that wasn't actually the funny part about the excursion but the baboon monkeys living there. Hide everything they could take away from you within your backpack! These lazy-looking guys are BEASTS! Especially when you try to fool around with them.

    14 Mother Temple 11.09.2010 Indonesien —

Mother Temple of Besakih, Rendang, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

We caught the temple fever and decided to book a mini bus for a full one-day tour up the Mother Temple in the north of Bali. Another must-see! But before we got there we had a couple of stops:

Stop 1: Monkey forest. Awesome, even more funny monkeys to fool around with. Can be aggressive too, if you don't make sure that you're the Alpha-monkey. They even tried to grab a bite of my GPS logger.

Stop 2: Picturesque rice terraces. Really picturesque, real rice. We took the must-have photo, bought a Coke and continued our trip.

Stop 3: Coffee plantage. In the middle of nowhere we got out for a small walk within the jungle. Already thought that the guide was trying to kidnap us, and blackmailing Switzerland. Luckily he just wanted us to show around. Thats where we've actually seen a Cat-Shit-Coffe cat the first time.

Stop 4: Batur. Where we had lunch. Batur is another huuuge volcano.

Stop 5: Mother Temple. We finally arrived and let me tell you this think is amazing. You have a great view from up there and temple huge. There were even ceremonies going on there. We decided to make a little tour around the temple. There is a public and a restricted part. You can only access the restricted part accompanied by a guide. He was smart young guy showing us around.

    15 Surfing in Kuta 12.09.2010 Indonesien —

    Kuta, Kuta, Indonesien

    Beschreibung

Remember when we promised to take surfing lessons? It was the last day and we drove up to Kuta. The hotel booked the lessons for us (my Indonesian was still lacking a little bit). We first had some dry exercises on the hotel roof with our teacher, showing us how to stand up and keep standing on the board. Then we finally got into the water - after a warm-up of course. The weaves were great (for rookies like us) and after a couple of face- and butt-plants we managed to actually surf. It's kinda like snowboarding but without the German tourists.

It was a great ending of a great trip!
