    1 A Long Journey 27.08.2011 USA —

    Kalaoa, USA

    Beschreibung

After a good night sleep of about 2,5 hours we got up at 3.30 am to catch our flight to Hawaii. First we took the plane from Zurich to London, where we stopped over for around 3 hours and had a traditional English breakfast with ham and eggs. The flight from London to Los Angeles took us 10,5 hours. It was the worst flight ever: almost half a day of sitting in uncomfortable, tiny chairs and listening to way too old stewardesses bitching around! Never ever fly to the USA with AA (American Airlines). The only good thing about it: they served plenty of food; which explanes their tiny-chair-problem in some kind of way. In LA we were only able to sit around like a bunch of dead flies. Promissing each other not to sleep during the last flight (to prevent jetlag) we got on the plane. It didn't last long and we both fell asleep for the whole flight time of 5,5 hours. But finally, after a total flighttime of 17,5 hours, we arrived to Big Islands international airport in Kona. It' s a cute little airport with very friendly staff. They even upgraded our rental car, so that we were now driving a Ford Escape SUV for the next couple of days. As we arrived in our nice hotel room, we had a quick rice-crispy dinner on the personal terrace and finally fell into the king-size hotel beds to get some rest after this very long journey!

2 Waking up with hawaiian music 28.08.2011 USA —

    Kapaau, USA

    Beschreibung

Our second day on Hawaiis biggest island was a bit of an adventure. We were supposed to roast under the sun for at least 6 hours, but the clouds made our plans change. We got into our car and drove up to the Pololu Valley in North Kohala, where the rough landscape makes it impossible to live. It was the beginning of a wild valley chain. It took us 45 minutes to get to the dead end road, where we parked our car and hiked down a rocky path to a beautiful black sand beach. At that time, the clouds were gone and we got the chance to sunbath in paradise. Unfortunately the sun disappeard behind a cliff after an hour and forced us to hike back up. So we drove back to our hotel to get a shower and a good dinner. At half past eight in the evening we realised that there were no restaurants in an acceptable distance from our hotel and that the restaurants at the hotel served their last meal before 9 o' clock. So we ran to the next best restaurant, which saved us from starving!! There wasn' t a big choice of food, so I ordered - without knowing what it was - ahi poke tempura roll (asian greens with yuzu soy glace and meyer lemon butter)! You should have seen my face, when the waitor served it!!! We couldn' stop laughing, 'cause it was sushi and I really don' t like sushi. But at least the day ended with a big smile on our faces.

3 Enjoying the beautiful Hapuna Beach 29.08.2011 USA —

    Kamuela, USA

    Beschreibung

On the third day of my holidays i got waked up by my sister at 7 o'clock in the morning, 'cause she couldn't sleep anymore. In some kind of way she forced me to get up, pack my luggage and get ready. After this we had a low budget breakfast from the bakery of our hotel and went straight to the beach to enjoy the sun for 2 hours. It was absolutely awesome, we felt like in a dream. Back from the beach, we checked out and drove towards the Volcano Village, where we stayed for the next 2 nights.

    Honomu, USA

The first stop on the way to the Volcano Village was at the Akaka Falls. The falls are 126 meters high and you can reach them by foot in less than half an hour. You can also see the smaller, but still beautiful Kahuna Falls.

Hilo is a small city, where it rains 278 days a year. We just stopped there for dinner, cause there is not a lot to see, except of the old, colorful buildings.

7 Last Stop: Volcano Village 29.08.2011

    Volcano

    Beschreibung

From Hilo we drove another 26 miles to the village on the base of the Kilauea caldera, a still active part of the Mauna Loa Volcano. The village is easy to find, you don't really need a GPS on the Hawaiian Islands. The Chalet Kilauea, which belongs to the Volcano Inn Hotel,  is very nice. We got a beautiful room, including a heater, because it' s a bit colder up here. Finally we fell asleep thinking of what we already experienced and still will.

    8 The Kilauea Volcano 30.08.2011 USA —

    USA

    Beschreibung

Our day started with a huge breakfast at the Lava Rock Café. We ordered pancakes and omelets with hashbrowns and toast. It was very yummy, but way too much. It could have fed 2 more people. American size!!!
Fully stuffed we went on our journey through the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. We watched at some steam vents, wandered past sulphur-kristal-banks and enjoyed the view of the Halema'uma'u crater (active part of the Kilauea Caldera) from the Jaggar Museum. After this we did some real exercising by hiking the Iki-Crater Trail, whitch took us about 1.5 hours. The landscape was absolutely fascinating: black rock, big cracks and colorful plants growing out of them. Later we walked through an underground lava tube and did another hike to the Pu'u Huluhulu cinder cone. This hike was exciting, 'cause it took us longer than we thought. On the way back to our car it was already darkening, so that we almost ran back in 25 instead of 45 minutes. We were completely drenched with sweat. The last thing we did in the park, was having a look on the glowing Halema'uma'u crater. Arrived back at the chalet we opened a bottle of Moscato d'Asti (swiss army knife bottel opener sucks; it took forever to get it open!!!) to celebrate the day.

    10 A coffee in Captain Cook 31.08.2011 USA —

    Captain Cook, USA

    Beschreibung

We drove along the beautiful coastline and stopped for a coffee in the small town of Captain Cook. The Town is not that amazing as the name makes it appear, it's just a small coffee plantation village. This fact made us get back on the road again very quickly.

13 The Stunning Waimea Canyon 01.09.2011 USA —

    Waimea, USA

    Beschreibung

We drove to the Waimea Canyon, which is located inland. We were supposed to do some hiking there, but in the rush I completely forgot the bag with our hiking shoes at the reception of the hotel. We noticed it way to late, so it was impossible to drive back and get them. We just enjoyed ourselves driving up the turnful street and stopped at many scenic view points to take some fabulous pictures of the colorful panorama. Back at the hotel we had a yummy KFC-dinner on the balcony.

14 Ziplining in the rainforest of the Kipu Ranch 02.09.2011 USA —

    Lihue, USA

    Beschreibung

Our seventh day on Hawaii begun with a 10 minute breakfast at the hotel, because the latest check-in time for ziplineing was at 8.15 am. Our guides Matt and Danny drove our group to their zipline-area at the Kipu Ranch. This area includes 8 different zipline-tracks, several suspension bridges and beautiful canopy walkways. We spent 6 freaking cool hours flying through the air. The adventure ended with a jump from the water zipline in to the refreshing Bamboo Pool and a bumpy ride back to the Outfitters office.
We spent the afternoon "hanging loose" at the Poipu Beach in front of our hotel.

15 Exploring the "Garden Isle" by Helicopter and... 03.09.2011 USA —

    Lihue, USA

    Beschreibung

The iPhone alarm woke us up at 5.30 am. We packed our staff (including motion sickness pills), rushed to the breakfast buffet to get our daily omelet and drove to the airport of Lihue. After a safety briefing we climbed into an Eco-Star-Helicopter and flew over the whole island of Kauai. We saw several nice valleys, the Jurassic Park Falls (yes you did read well, they filmed it here in Kauai), the Olokele Canyon, the Waimea Canyon, known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific", the pictoresque cliffs of the Napali Coast, which are the highest sea cliffs in the world and finally the wettest spot on earth, the crater of Mount Waialeale (450-500 inches of rain every year).  Not enough for us!

    16 ...and by foot 03.09.2011 USA —

    Kilauea, USA

    Beschreibung

After the breathtaking flight we made our way to the north shore to explore the Napali Coast by foot. On the Kalalau Trail we hiked into the first valley, which is called Hanakapiai Valley. It is a really nice hike with ups and downs, awesome smells of guava fruit, pineapple and avocado all the time. Once we arrived at the beach of the valley, we stopped for a short break, went for a swim, before we continued hiking to the Hanakapiai Falls. This one was a really tough trail. It leaded us through the jungle, where the way wasn't signed properly. We climbed over roots and huge bamboo canes and we had to cross the stream a dozen of times. It seamed a never ending track, but finally we reached the most beautiful waterfalls i've ever seen. Since we only started the whole trip in the early afternoon and already hiked for around 2.5 hours, we didn't have a lot of time to spend at the falls; the sun was going to set soon, and we didn't want to cross the stream in the darkness of the night without even a flashlight. With two other couples we made our way back to the beach. It was a mistake to follow the first couple, 'cause they led us on a wrong way. At that moment we almost startet panicking. It was getting dark and we "felt" lost in the jungle. But a few seconds later we did find the familiar way and went on hiking. We reached the beach after less than an hour, stopped just for a few minutes and climbed further up. It got harder and harder, but we made the whole trip before sunset. :-))) As a treat we had a very nice dinner in Princeville prior to the 2 hour drive back to the hotel.

17 From Kauai to Maui, the island of the sun... 04.09.2011 USA —

    Kaanapali, USA

    Beschreibung

This early morning we almost missed our flight because of the yearly Kauaian Marathon, which startet at our hotel. Many streets were closed and the other ones were blocked by traffic. The way from our hotel to the airport took us 1 hour and 25 minutes instead of half an hour. Anyway, we made it to the airport just in time and left the island of Kauai. The flight was very short, so that we arrived in Maui only 40 minutes after departure. After picking up our car we drove to the Westin Maui Hotel at Kaanapali Beach. Once arrived, we checked out the huge hotel surroundings, and the internet facilities, because our room wasn't ready yet. They have the worst internet facilities ever. They have just 2 computers for the whole complex and guess what, one of the two PC's didn't even work. At about 3 o'clock we got the key to our room. It was very dirty and we found hairs and sand on our beds; what a nice welcome present! We payed a lot of money for this hotel and we were very disappointed by the service, especially about the lacking cleanliness and the unfriendly staff. To compensate the disappointment we had a really nice dinner right by the ocean! It was the first time I tried coconut shrimps, but i immediately decided after the first bite to eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the rest of my vacation. Yummy!!!!

18 Pooltime and traditional hawaiian Lu'au Dinner 05.09.2011 USA —

    Lahaina, USA

    Beschreibung

Today we enjoyed ourselves sunbathing at the pool, drinking fruit shakes and listening to music all day long. At about 5 o'clock we took the shuttle to the historic village of Lahaina to go to our pre-booked Old Lahaina Lu'au. A Lu'au is a traditonal hawaiian feast. The highlights of this event were: the local food, such as the Kalua Pig (pork roasted slowly for eight hours in the beachside "imu" - the hawaiian underground oven; the centerpiece of every Lu'au celebration), the stunning Hula Show (including the Kahiko - ancient Hula and the Auana - the modern Hula) and the all-you-can-drink offer. We spent a beautiful evening, we will never forget.

    Lahaina, USA

    Beschreibung

The day started with some 'ono (delicious in hawaiian) eggs benedict @ breakfast and the sound of the Pool waterfalls while we were sunbathing. At about 5 pm we went to Lahaina to do some shopping. Since we didn't find what we were looking for (nice new swimwear), we decided to go and eat dinner at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant. Its a very nice restaurant, all about the movie Forrest Gump, serving many different kinds of shrimp, its their speciality! We had the meal called Shrimpers Heaven. We got 4 little baskets filled with fried shrimps, french fries, japanese style tempura shrimps, chili shrimps and the tip of the top: our beloved coconut shrimps. It was absolutely heavenly!!

20 Snorkling in the Molokini Crater and... 07.09.2011 USA —

    Kihei, USA

    Beschreibung

This was a really early wake up. We had to check in for snorkeling at 7 am @ Ma'alaea Harbor, which is located half an hour away from our hotel. As we arrived we got a friendly welcome on board. The Maui Magic crew presented us a traditional hawaiian chant, including horning seashells. That's how they explained us the meaning: it's asking mother earth for permission and save travels through the waters of Hawaii. Just a few miles from the harbor we spotted a lot of dolphins. They did some funny-looking flips and followed our catamaran for a while. We then proceeded to the Molokini Crater, where we spent 50 minutes snorkeling along the coral reef. We saw a lot of colorful sealife.

After snorkeling in the Molokini Crater, we got back on the boat and drove for another half an hour to Turtle Town. Befor lunch we had 20 more minutes for snorkeling. During that short time we discovered two graceful Green Sea Turtles. While we enjoyed the cristal clear waters, our crew fired up the on-board BBQ grill to cook some delicious hamburgers and hot-dogs. After lunch we headed back to the harbor slip and spotted another giant turtle. We spent the afternoon shopping at the Cannery Mall in Lahaina and finally found our nice swimwear!  What an amazing day...

You won't believe it: but i still got burnt, like i never did in my life. So we decided to spend the evening in our hotel room with a bottle of after-sun lotion and coconut m&m's while enjoying the beautiful view from our balcony.
