2 Arriving at The Wolcott Hotel 04.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

After a coach trip from the airport into the city, we arrived at our destination, The Wolcott hotel on 31st street.
The hotel itself seemed quite grand as you walked into the lobby, to the left a spiral stair case and above the ceiling was littered with chaneliers. The deco did seem abit dated but it gave off a unique retro vibe.
After waiting in the lobby for our room keys, we finally got to see our room, 412, on the 4th floor.
We all picked our beds, dumped our luggage and off out again for some well deserved dinner!

3 Our first meal at Empire Pizza 04.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

Just around the corner from the hotel Walcott was Empire pizza. We stopped here to have our first meal in the city.
It was nothing special, just a small, family run takeaway shop, but the pizza was amazing. Quite frankly the biggest slices of pizza I have ever seen, and with every possible flavour, ranging from lasagne to chicken tikka. We ate her again on several more occasions; it was great value for money.

4 Visiting the Ann Inc. Corporate Office | Headquart 05.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

This morning we went to breakfast at the Ann Inc. corporate head office in Times Square.
Ann Inc. owns both the American brands Loft and Ann Taylor. The name 'Ann Taylor' came from the name of the bestselling shirt dress in the 50s designed by Richard Liebeskind. He opened the first Ann Taylor store in 1954 in New Haven, Connecticut. The 'timeless, sophisticated, classic brand has only got bigger and it opens its headquarters in New York in 1975. Throughout the decades its logo and style has changed to reflect the time period, in the 60s they took inspiration from style icon Jackie Kennedy and the relaxed, nonchalant style of the hoover child. Moving into the 70s they style developed further, taking inspiration from Charlie’s angels and studio 54.from the power suit of the 80s it develops further into the designs we see in store today, which is said by the company to compare to the likes of L K Bennet. Even Julia Roberts worked in Ann Taylor, and during a shift was casted for her role in 'Mystic Pizza'.
The sister brand 'Loft' was launched some time later in 1998 with 18 stores. The brand is a more affordable and aimed at a slightly younger target market and I found after visiting the store its layout and signage was similar to that in H&M. in 2003 Ann Taylor.com was founded and Loft.com followed in 2004.
The company celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2004 also, and to commemorate this they reproduced the infamous shirt dress which was sold in stores. They have also had a 50 page spread in American vogue, 'the faces of Ann Taylor'.
The Loft outlet became a $1Billion brand and almost doubled in size in 2011. Currently the company has over 942 stores across the US and Puerto Rico, and 170 factories.
Demi Moore is currently the face of Ann Taylor, following Katie Holmes.
After learning a great deal in various presentations they put on for us we finished with a Trivia game in which every question answered correctly won a goodie bag. After putting myself forward for all the questions I won the last goodie bag which contained a beaded cuff bracelet from Loft. The morning was insightful and the staff were extremely welcoming and inspiring. They really sold the brand to me and I hope to apply for an internship with the company in the future.

    5 Times Square 05.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

After leaving Ann Inc. we headed out in the busy streets of Times Square. It really wasn’t like anywhere I had been before. It was so lively, and everything seemed on a much larger scale. All the billboards and signs were much larger than ones I have seen in England and the use of technology was everywhere with clever video billboards. My favourite was a massive screen on the side of a building showing the inside of different rooms with people doing various things in each. As well as large billboards some of the stores made themselves noticed as well. I have shown some photos below of some of these stores. The most eye catching being Desigual, where the building was all painted multi coloured.

After looking round the bustling square we began search for some typical American food, stopping at the lively Dallas BBQ grill. The menu was extremely good value with heaps of food. i ordered a BBQ chicken burger which came with loads of chips and coleslaw. Not only did the food come in its masses and it was cheap, it tasted amazing. Would defiantly go back!

6 Climbing the Empire State Building 05.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

After lunch we decided we wanted to get a real feel for New York and the best way to do that is too see it all at the same time. We headed to the empire state building and planned to be at the top for sunset. Luckily there wasn’t much of a queue and before we knew it we were on the lift up to the 86th floor!
I was surprised to find my ears popping and knew we must be really high up!
The views outside were breath taking and the sun was beginning to set. After taking in the views and photographing the sights we headed back down out of the cold and wind.
I have never seen a view like it as this was the highest building I have ever been up and feel its defiantly the best way to start off seeing the sights in New York.it gave me a flavour for the city and was incredible being higher than any of the other skyscrapers that dominate the city.

7 FIT Daphne Guinness exhibition 06.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

This morning we decided to head down to FIT, (New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology) to see the Daphne Guinness exhibition.
The exhibition itself was relatively small but her clothes were exquisite, her wardrobe is defiantly something to be jealous of. From chic Chanel dresses to gorgeous Alexander McQueen shoes the collection was full of designer pieces. What I found most surprising was how small the clothing was; it really showed how slender she is.

“Daphne is one of – if not the – most stylish women living” (fashion designer Tom Ford)

Although photography wasn’t allowed in the exhibition I have shown some images below from the FIT websites so you can get a feel of what the garments were like.

"Why do an exhibition on Daphne Guinness? Because she is fearless about wearing the most extreme clothes and shoes, but is no mere clothes horse. Because she is a serious collector of couture, who is also a creative force in her own right. Because she is an extraordinary individual whose perspective on fashion is unique and important." 8 Shopping on 5th Avenue 06.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

After the Daphne Guinness exhibition we decided to walk to central park. We headed down 5th avenue to do a spot of shopping along the way.
Below I have shown some of my favourite photographs of interesting visual merchandising we saw.
The walk was long but the sun was shining the further we went the more expensive the shops became. As we drew to the end of the street at central park we hit all the designer stores where most of the window displays were very creative and visually exciting. My favourite were the Miu Miu windows. I loved the chic and elegant French glamour the displays portrayed.
Not only were the window displays exciting, some stores had innovative designs on the buildings themselves, for example the giant tommy Hilfiger bow, and the gold Diesel Mohican.
It was no surprise that the Apple store was particularly exciting as it was a giant transparent cube with a lift down into the store. The store itself was very clean cut and minimalistic to mirror the brand identity. It defiantly attracted a lot of attention and stood out the most from all the other stores on the avenue.

    9 St Patricks Cathederal 06.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

Whilst walking down 5th Avenue, we walked past St Patricks Cathedral. I decided to go in at have a look around. The architecture of the building was beautiful and inside was full with candles and decorative statues. The church was quite big and was the location of Mariah Careys first wedding.
The atmosphere was very peaceful and welcoming, and after lighting a candle I took some photographs and just sat for a few moments taking in its beauty. I found it hard to believe a place this peaceful was on one of the busiest shopping streets in New York.

    10 Central Park 06.01.2012

    Beschreibung

As we reached central park we stopped to watch a group of street dancers. As the crowd gathered they began. Not only were they talented but the whole act was really funny. I filmed some of it and have uploaded the video on YouTube on the link below.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UROSDmp9kXs&feature=youtu.be

I can imagine it looks much prettier in the spring but as we went in early January all the plants and trees were bare. As we walked down into the park we came across and ice skating rink and all went skating. It was so surreal being in the middle of a park with giant buildings all around. This was by far the highlight of my time spent in New York; I would defiantly love to have this experience again.

    11 rockefeller centre 06.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

After unsuccessfully hailing a cab, we gave up and began our long walk back to the hotel. As we began walking back we stopped at a hot dog stand to get a chilli dog and sit outside the Rockefeller centre to eat them. On the Dior shop building that was opposite us we saw a giant clock projected onto the front of the building. As it counted down we decided to wait and see what would happen when it reached 00:00. 3, 2, 1, we defiantly weren’t expecting this. The windows began to open and close as huge projections of snow flakes and bubbles began to form and pop and dance around the building. i filmed the whole show and have uploaded the video to YouTube on the link below.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPFgbtwYG_g&feature=youtu.be

I have never been happier to have waited as this was possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen. It was something I had heard about and have always wanted to see. As I looked around me I could see the crowd getting bigger as people were stopping to watch. Really glad I saw this.

    12 The High Line 07.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

The High Line is a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It’s a fair walk from the hotel but defiantly worth it. Although, similarly to Central Park I’m sure it’s more beautiful in spring and summer as they had no winter plants but still the views were amazing, we even saw the statue of liberty from one of the viewing points. It was a lovely stroll with benches and wooden deck chairs scattered along and filled with people quietly reading and just relaxing. The sun was out and it was a great day to go to the garden.

    13 Soho 07.01.2012 USA —

    Manhattan, New York, USA

    Beschreibung

After walking the High Line we headed for Soho. i really liked the shopping here, it was less commercial than 5th Avenue and had more independant stores and the charming street stalls. after have a light lunch at Myladies bar we carried on to find Topshop. i was really shocked at how expensive it was in there, i definatly would wait untill i got back to england. even with the exchange rate it was clearly more expensive than in the UK. The visual merchendising in store was simlar to the britsh topshop with quircky outfits and displays. The products were also very simlar and i often saw items that i have seen over here as well.

    Beschreibung

On our final morning here in New York City we decided to go back to Times Square one last time and go to toys r us. The massive toy store had a big lit up screens on the shop front, and a Ferris wheel inside!! It was so much fun, they had photo opportunities all around the store (see below), and even a Willy Wonker chocolate factory. Defiantly a fun way to end the holiday. We brought our last souvenirs and then back to the hotel to meet the coach for the airport =(

We arrived back in London early on Monday morning. Exhausted and jetlagged, I’m not going to lie I was slightly happy to be nearly home. I had such an amazing time and made memory’s I will hold with me forever. I really hope to go back there some day (hopefully soon) to do an internship or work placement. I found the city a friendly and vibrant place. Although I defiantly need to practise hailing a cab!
